Get your phones and cameras ready. Thursday, June 15, is Nature Photography Day, the day the North American Nature Photography Association and millions of photography lovers celebrate nature with photography.
The National Day Calendar website recommends you celebrate nature by:
Taking a guided tour through a local preserve.
Visiting a botanical garden.
Going bird watching.
Visiting a national park.
Watching a sunset or sunrise.
Visiting a lake, river, or the ocean.
Most of us have cell phones that take great pictures, so you don't need a fancy DSLR camera. Many of the photos below were taken with my iPhone.
If you are busy or unable to celebrate Nature Photography Day by taking pictures, enjoy some of my photos below or visit some of the sights I've provided of famous nature photographers. Arthur Morris, a photographer listed below, says one of the best ways to become a better photographer is to look at photos.
Joel Sartore’s Photo Ark has thousands of close-up photos of vanishing species. Sartore, a National Geographic Photographer and Speaker, founded the Photo Ark, a groundbreaking effort to document species before they disappear—and to get people to care while there’s still time.
Or click on some of these famous photographers (thanks to Richard Wong Photography for his list of the 10 most influential photographers of all time. I learned about nature photographers Phillip Hyde, Arthur Morris, and John Shaw on Wong's site.)
Daniel Buckscott – based in Juneau, Alaska – landscapes and wildlife
Clyde Butcher – black and white the Ansel Adams of today
Phillip Hyde – Sierra Club photographer, Landscapes including black & white
Robert Glenn Ketchum – landscapes
Mangelsen – landscapes and wildlife
Arthur Morris – birds as art
John Shaw - landscapes and wildlife
Finally, here are a few of my nature photos. Unfortunately, I lost over 1/2 of my photos five years ago when my external hard drive crashed. Fortunately, many of them survived. Enjoy
